Whenever we get to hear the term fashion, the first thing that strikes our mind is a grand fashion show. Or, even the words like, garments, , fashion sketches, accessories, colour and overall look of the outfit. But only a few of us can understand the textures of the fabric , terms like, fibers and yarns, and technique incorporated to make the fabric. And, most importantly, the patterns and embroidery amalgamated in an outfit to enhance its surface and appeal. Well, this is the moment when we get into the domain of textiles.

However, the word textiles has its own long and complex history. Textiles can be felt or spun fibers made into yarn and subsequently netted, looped, knit or woven to make fabrics, which appeared in the Middle East during the late Stone Age. From ancient times to the present day, methods of textile production have evolved frequently , and the choices of textiles available have influenced how people carried their possessions, clothed themselves, and decorated their surroundings. Textiles possess a high level of prominence the field of fashion as materials and fabrics used in the creation of clothing, shoes, bags, and accessories are formulated by the adepts of textile field only and without them these items simply couldn’t be produced.

Besides that, it’s important to know what we wear as many of us are quite susceptible to many dermatological issues such as chafing, skin irritation, rashes and various allergies due to the contact of substances like formaldehyde finishing resins, dyes, glues, chemical additives and tanning agents which are often process with various fabrics , to avoid which  one has to possess the knowledge of textiles along with fashion. On the other hand through printing, embroidery, weaving, or knitting, textiles offer additional depth, texture, and personality to clothing, distinguishing them in the fashion industry.

Some of the traditional indian embroideries like chanderi, chikankari, alpana, kantha, phulkari, kashida and many more continue their legacy as the core of traditional indian fashion industry followed by their increasing demand in international market. From heavily embroidered bridal lehenga to decent yet sophisticated kanjivaram  saree ,every thread of these textiles play a significant role in enhancing the overall beauty of the outfit by adding a resplendent yet impeccable touch of Indian traditionality in these clothes propelling us to our ancestral ethnicity and rich culture of India.
